Why Migrate?

In 2007 Avaya announced the end of life notice for the Avaya Definity telephone system meaning that future upgrades and ongoing maintenance and support has become increasingly difficult, expensive and in some instances not possible.

Avaya Definity is still a stable and reliable platform and you may feel that your Avaya Definity system meets all your communication needs. However, since 2007 your business will be impacted by three issues:

1) Hardware failure that cannot be resolved.
2) Inability to add Definity software licenses.
3) Incompatibility with supported Microsoft operating systems.

Hardware failure that cannot be resolved As Avaya Definity phone systems have been out of production for a number of years, access to spare parts is increasingly difficult as they need to be sourced from 2nd hand models that have been decommissioned.
IP Incompatibility Avaya Definity phones are not IP enabled. This means that any business that are still using this phone system will not be able to take advantage of the benefits IP telephony including easier management and scalability.
SIP Incompatibility. SIP lines are the modern alternative to the traditional ISDN lines. The cut line rental costs in half and reduce call costs by up to 80%. ISDN is being discontinued in 2020.
Scalability/licensing If your business is looking to add phone extensions to your network you will find it difficult, expensive and in some cases impossible as the licences needed are no longer available.
Voicemail, no longer supported, Audit. embedded Audix, difficult to find. Voice mail to email and advanced auto attendant is not available.
Adoption of Unified Communications Ability for a business to adopt unified communications that enables better customer service, productivity and lower costs is impacted as the Avaya Definity is no longer developed.
Operating System Avaya Definity is not compatible with Windows 7 or later editions. This leaves your business vulnerable to security threats and technical issues as the communication network has to run on an OS which is no longer supported by Microsoft. In 2014 Microsoft ended its support of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. This means that they will no longer be producing new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates for users of Windows XP. This also means that security updates will no longer be produced for Windows Server 2003.


What is the Impact of Avaya Definity Software License Unavailability?

While your Avaya Definity telephone system may operate adequately, without a hardware fault, long after 2007, the ability to add software licenses to the Avaya Definity telephone system will no longer be available. As a consequence, your business will not be able to:
  • Scale the size of the business by adding more phones to the Avaya Definity phone system
  • Increase the number of voicemail ports to increase capacity
  • Add more call centre agents to meet customer demand
